CAPTIVATING CERAMICS AND GLASSThe next meeting in the series "(Un)everyday works of art" will be dominated by ceramics and glass. They have been known to people almost since the dawn of civilization. They arise from the Earth's matter. They have undergone a huge evolution and multiple transformations. The human gesture gave them a sense of meaning, a specific look and colour. They are distinguished by a multitude of forms, shapes and applications; they attract attention with their functionality, expression and beauty. They provide people with a more comfortable lifestyle, shape their aesthetic sensations and fulfil desirable social functions.
The shapeless clay block excavated from the ground, in direct contact with the artist's hands, turns into a significant object, an object. The artistic values of ceramics are determined by many factors, including formation, firing, glazing and decoration, which affect its decorativeness and expression of forms, gloss and matt texture of the surface of ceramic vessels, often of industrial character, ecological inspiration.
Glass matter contains many properties of life. At the same time it is brittle and durable, delicate and resistant, transparent and impenetrable, cool, but made of hot plastic. It awakens human imagination. It is a material of numerous symbolic meanings, indispensable in many fields and spaces of the world.
Polish ceramics and glass are highly valued and sought after on the collector's market. They are designed by outstanding artists of international renown, creating more and more bold and surprising, unique works. Ceramic and glass objects and sculptures can still be bought for little money, and their collections - even small, interestingly illuminated - look impressive and make an impression.
The lecture "Charming ceramics and glass" will be just a sketch of the story of these fascinating two fields of art over the last seventy years; it will familiarise you with the geography of the most important national centres of their production and collection.
