The Milky Way of Magdalena Rytelena-Skorek began five years ago.
This is how the artist describes this period. The time of waiting for the birth of the first child became the time of returning to easel painting and drawing. After several years of dealing with wall painting, life - as the author of the paintings and drawings presented at the exhibition claims - showed her the way.
The world of unlimited imagination, the multitude of motifs in the space of one work, as well as the balance of composition, sophisticated motifs and decorative elements (e.g. golden background or golden birds ready to be multiplied) - have a hypnotic effect. The painting by Magdalena Rytel-Skorek activates the imagination in a strange way: the mysterious characters of her works draw the viewer into their worlds, surprise with their physiognomy, tell their own stories, ask questions that we would like to find answers to. We feel subcutaneously that everyone has their own secret, is an expression of emotions, experiences and feelings. The artist's works are also a space inspired by ancient civilizations, including Sumerians and Egyptians, the decorative character of the 19th century Arts&Crafts movement, the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch, Art Nouveau and Lynch's films. It seems that this is only an element of motifs filtered by Magdalena Rytel-Skorek, for whom, however, man has always been the main motif.
- That is why I give cats human qualities. And although they are presented in a rather static arrangement, there is a mental relation between the individual characters. Cats have human eyes, they are shaved, none of them have moustaches. They are only seemingly tamed - says the artist about the heroes of her works. And she adds: - When I finish one motif, I have another image in my head and an impression that they are connected by an invisible thread. I know what I want to paint, but sometimes I am surprised by my own imagination.
The exhibition of painting and drawing by Magdalena Rytel-Skorek shall be presented by STALOWA Art Gallery and Arte Hotel in Zamość from February 7th 2020.
