Venus at the Gates of Destiny - triptych 3x 160 x 85 cm, 2025
oil, metal slag, own technique, canvas
166 x 273 cm
Description
This triptych responds to the 15th Florence Art Biennale theme, "Light and Darkness." In the central panel, Venus/Goddess bestows destiny. She holds an apple, a symbol of temptation, in one hand and pomegranates, which symbolize life and fertility, in the other. Next to the apple is a snake, ready to bite and serving as a warning. The fruit is intended for the woman on the left side of the triptych. She is an excluded woman surrounded by deformed birds reminiscent of Hieronymus Bosch's works, symbolizing decline. She holds a dead rooster, associated with announcing death, misfortune, failure, the decline of values, and the denial or loss of faith. However, the woman is beautiful, young, and alluring. She does not seem worried about her fate and appears brave, confident, and defiant. The pomegranate in the goddess's other hand is intended for the blessed woman on the right who is pregnant. The pomegranate symbolizes fertility, life, royalty, and divinity. The blessed woman gazes at the fruit tenderly, holding it as if she sees the seed of new life in it. There is a golden glow around her head. The setting of the scene refers to Van Eyck's painting "Madonna of Lucca," which speaks of the divine presence in everyday life and the interpenetration of the sacred and the profane.
