Tomasz Karabowicz
Initially fascinated with the Italian Renaissance, Karabowicz has painted multifaceted works in mild chiaroscuro. His main interests are portraits and still lives, less often landscapes. He uses pastel as well as bright colours, giving all of them crystal clarity by skilfully applied glazes. In his works everything is as if ‘ceremonial’ – in a mysterious light, with no blemishes or scratches – which appears to be very intriguing for a viewer. In 2011, the literary magazine Metafory (‘Metaphors’) published a text on Karabowicz’s artistic work, where the article’s author rightly observes a clear reference between the artist's paintings and the works created in the 30s of the 20th century. ‘It is painting as if stemming from the Art Deco - with very smooth and soft surface’. It seems that also the so-called Vilnius School of the thirties, centred around the painter Ludomir Ślendziński, can be suggested as the source of the classicising style of Tomasz Karabowicz, who, above all, aims at showing the plasticity of objects and models.
