Biography

Born in Żyrardów (1981). Graduate of the Stefan Żeromski High School in Żyrardów with a humanities profile. Studied at the Faculty of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (2002-2007), where he obtained a diploma with rector's honors, realized under the supervision of Professor Marek Sapetto (2007). He completed his diploma thesis as an additional specialization, in the field of Wall Painting Techniques and Technologies, under the supervision of Dr Edward Tarkowski, while the theoretical part of the diploma work was written under the supervision of Dr Anna Lewicka-Morawska.
Karapuda's work was initially concerned mainly with man, object and space, and the combination of these elements in any arrangement. In his painting compositions of that time, both in their formal and content layers, he readily referred to tradition, which he gave a universal dimension. In subsequent years, through a group of motifs characteristic of his work, such as a shadow, a trace or an object, the artist talked about man and his condition, leaving aside the literal representation of the human figure. Around 2013, the artist expanded his artistic activity with drawing, object and photographic forms. Karapuda's painting works from 2013 to 2017 are primarily an exploration of the relationship between conventionality and illusion, and a painterly analysis of themes and motifs related to the categories of space and place, in the context of the concepts of heterotopia and non-places. In 2017, the author reformulated his painting idiom in order to include in narrative painting compositions a conceptual reflection on the tensions produced between word and image. The paintings thus created, epigraphic in nature, have a compositional structure close to the tradition of the emblem. Visually, these works assume the meeting of a graphic sign in the form of a letter with the image of an often bland, boring and sometimes accidental fragment of reality. The inscriptions are written in one of the most successful and widespread typefaces in history - Times New Roman. This verbal commentary is written in English to universalize the message, which in a historical context places it in the role of contemporary Latin. The compositions placed inside the frame have been reduced to monochromatic, lavish drawings, which, devoid of colourful flavours, are more an idea of the quoted fragments of ineffective reality than their aesthetic interpretation. The lemma or motto (word) binds here on the surface of the painting with the imago (picture) by means of an intriguing play of meanings, and the illusory painted frame, apart from being a banal carrier of a sentence, inscribes this work into Derridian deliberations on the role, function and mutual relations of the ergon and parergon in the context of the picture plane. Thus, the author and the viewer of this painting unwittingly take part in an autotelic discourse devoted to the ontology of the image. The characteristic features of Karapuda's art, irrespective of the media he uses, are an almost programmatic narration in the message layer and a plastic form close to the solutions of geometric art. In his works, the artist almost always uses flat, saturated color spots, drawing interjections, painterly fini and puristic composition. Karapuda's artistic attitude, derived from the art of metaphor, consists in a skillful balancing between the abstract and figurative idiom, never crossing the borders of decoration and illustration.
Arkadiusz Karapuda is the author of over twenty solo exhibitions and participant in over a hundred group exhibitions, including in Poland, China, Germany, Bulgaria, Spain, Russia, Czech Republic, but also in Lithuania, Ukraine, Slovenia and Italy. He is the recipient of numerous awards, distinctions and scholarships, including the Scholarship of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage (2014), the Polish Culture Foundation Scholarship (2013), the Award of the Marshal of the West Pomeranian Province, at the 24th Festival of Polish Contemporary Painting in Szczecin (2012), the Entry Initiative Scholarship (2008), the Grand Prix of the 7. International Painting Workshop Pieńków (2007), Józef Szajna Award (2007), BPH Bank Award (2007), Minister of Culture and Art Scholarship (2005). He has organized and participated in numerous national and international plein-airs, workshops, residencies and study stays, as well as conventions, conferences, symposia and seminars on art and culture in the broad sense. He was also a participant and scholarship holder of Erasmus and Erasmus+ programs for research and teaching staff (2010, 2012,2014, 2016, 2017, 2018).
