Description
From the series "Image and word."
The words "Hear O Israel" are the beginning of the most important prayer, the creed of Judaism. The inscription is topped with a Torah crown, formed from flames suggesting the seven lights of the menorah; in letters - four animals from the verse at the bottom: "Be strong as a leopard, light as an eagle, swift as a deer, and mighty as a lion to do the will of your God in heaven." (Pirkei Avot 5:23). This maxim, illustrated with images of animals, is a common motif in the painted decoration of synagogues in Eastern Europe.
